Spin focuses on the progressive new music scene and young adult culture involved with alternative music. Each issue includes reviews, essays, profiles and interviews on a range of music from rock to jazz.
Founded in 1985 by Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione's son, Bob Jr., Spin magazine aimed to occupy a space forged and outgrown by Rolling Stone, which had since moved on from counter-culture reporting to a more pop-culture focus. Due to its well-funded birth, Spin rode the wave of the burgeoning alternative rock movement and was afforded the luxury of being as controversial as it wanted, forsaking at times somewhat slanted reporting in favor of the punch and jibe. Nonetheless, it brought into America's peripheral vision early stories of the ravages of AIDS in Africa, in addition to standard artist interviews and album reviews. Switching from a tabloid format to a glossy perfect-bound publication, the magazine now reports on fleeting music trends and the Next Big Thing more than it unearths alternative-rock gems, but it still does a good job of uncovering behind-the-scenes-stories, such as the violent acts and deplorably unhygienic conditions of 1999's Woodstock III music festival, in a way no other music magazine does. When the Beastie Boys released Hello Nasty in 1998, Spin published three different editions of the magazine--each with a separate headshot of one member of the renegade hip-hop group. Three years later, Rolling Stone copied the gimmick, featuring the members of boy band 'N Sync individually on five different covers. If Spin's influence in rock journalism was ever in question, this event provides irrefutable proof. --Beth Massa

Summary: I HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANY COPIES YET ! SO IT'S HARD TO GIVE A REVIEW !I HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANY COPIES YET ! SO IT'S HARD TO GIVE A REVIEW !Summary: Twenty minutes per issueI ordered SPIN for a year, but soon found that the amount of time I spend with a new issue is not much more than 20 minutes. I'm forty now, so I don't care who is supposed to be cool. Most of the bands are not that interesting to me, but that's not the point. It's the writing, mostly pretty stupid photographs and record reviews that don't excite me. In my opinion, a better magazine supposed to cover similar ground is "Under the radar". If you really care about music and want to read an informative magazine, try "Mojo". They cover a wide range of different styles and I spend usually several hours with a new issue. Of course, you won't get it for ten dollars a year!BTW, my SPIN subscription ran out several months ago and I keep receiving it for free. But do I care? Summary: Much easier to digest than an issue of rolling stone. And for my money a better deal, better magazine, better writing, beter everything. This or alternative press are the best AND most affordable music magazines that there are out there. (the only music magazine I'm a bigger fan of is cmj new music monthly which comes with a cd of new music every month..sadly it's not sold in stores anywhere anymore but i regress) Really there's not a whole lot else to say if you've never read this magazine you should probably check an issue out before subscribing but I don't see how anyone could hate it. If you are in love with rolling stone magazine than spin isn't for you because it's aimed at the common man, where as rs seems to be aimed at people who like over indulgent articles that ultimately don't entertain or enlighten people to anything new. If you like something that is good for a quick read here or there and to be on par with what is hot today spin will give you that and so much more.x Summary: have yet to receive an issue of the mag.....it takes too long to from the time of purchase to receiving the first issue...... I have yet to receive my first issue. I already know spin is a good magazine, just issues with actually having it in my hands.Summary: What can I say? What can I say? I bought this as a gift for my 16 year old son, he loves it....and so does my 21 year old daughter. I've even found an article or two that I've enjoyed as well :) |
